A PERSON has died after being hit by a train on a Hampshire railway line.

Paramedics were alerted to a casualty on the tracks at Portchester station at around 6.45pm on Tuesday.

Despite their best efforts, the person was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to British Transport Police, efforts are now underway to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.

However, the incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.

Services between Southampton Central and Havant were disrupted last night but have since resumed.

A statement previously issued by South Western Railway said: "Due to emergency services dealing with an incident between Fareham and Fratton all lines are blocked.

"Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until 11pm."

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: " We were called to Portchester station at 6.46pm yesterday (May 4) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.

"Officers are working to identify the deceased and inform their next of kin.

"This incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."
