A COLLEGE student has once again won the South Regional BMX Championship.

For the second consecutive year, Barton Peveril Sixth Form College’s Aimee Bancroft took home first place at the South Regional BMX Championships.

This year’s championship took place at Hayes Hawkes BMX Course in London and played host to the region’s best BMX cyclists.

Bancroft, who is vying for national and international titles in the coming season, earned her place in the invitation-only event after winning an interclub competition held at Bournemouth BMX Track on October 25.

The student said she was “super stoked and happy” to defend her title.

“Being the only girl in my age at the final stage of the competition I decided to race the men – it was pretty tough but I was slowly catching up with them throughout the day!”

Despite a limited number of racing opportunities, Bancroft was signed by Mongoose Factory BMX Team UK earlier in the academic year, enabling her to develop her riding skills, as well as receiving sponsorship.

The student also benefits from the College’s Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) which helps her “maintain her strong level of study whilst competing at a high, national level”.

As well as this, the BMX rider has been selected for the National School of Racing’s (NSR) Talent Development Programme for the third consecutive year.

The programme is coordinated in association with British Cycling, helping to nurture 30 of the country’s most talented cyclists across the BMX, Mountain Biking, Circuit and Track, and Track and Sprint disciplines.

A college spokesperson said: “Aimee Bancroft hopes her success continues, in her bid to turn her passion into her profession.”
