SOUTHAMPTON port bosses have unveiled plans to prevent the side of a dock being damaged by vessels blown off course.

The city council is studying an application relating to the entrance to the King George V Graving Dock, which has been part of the port since the 1930s.

Associated British Ports (ABP) has submitted proposals to install a fender system to protect the dock as well as preventing damage to vessels.

The Grade II-listed structure is used for smaller, coaster-sized craft associated with the bulk-handling trade.

ABP's application says vessels entering or leaving the dock have been affected by the strength and direction of the wind, resulting in occasional collisions with the quay.

It adds: "The proposal is to install a new fender system which will provide protection to the dock structure and the vessels."

The dock was opened by King George V and Queen Mary on July 26 1933 and was used for the repair and maintenance of the largest ocean liners.

ABP's fender plan is outlined in a Public Notice published by the city council.
