WHILE England waits for attractions to reopen, the Echo remembers when we were doing the same 20 years ago.

Following the foot-and-mouth crisis in 2001, many outdoor areas closed to the public, including Upton Country Park, Poole.

The 100-acre country park closed on March 3, 2001, before reopening to visitors in May 2001 following a review of restrictions.

Restrictions were also lifted on the majority of footpaths around Poole.

Bournemouth Echo:

Areas close to livestock remained off-limits and visitors were advised to keep dogs on short leads and use disinfectant where provided.

They were also urged not to leave waste food or feed any animal, and not to go near sheep, cows, goats, pigs or deer.

Other areas reopened around Poole including footpaths at Ashington Cutting, Rushcombe Bottom and Barrow Hill, Talbot Heath, Gravel Hill to Arrowsmith Road and the Canford Magna area.

Access to "open" land at the New Forest was reinstated and its car parks were reopened.

Bournemouth Echo:

Forest visitors were initially restricted to inclosures and established paths and tracks while dog walkers were required to keep their pets on leads to avoid contact with forest livestock.

These pictures were taken when Upton Country Park was reopened.
