FIRE crews tackled a car fire at Southampton Common late last night.

The firefighters were on the scene on Cemetery Road at around 9pm.

One witness said they helped crews by forming a "human guard" to safely block off the road.

It is currently not known how the fire started.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "One St Mary’s fire engine was sent to a vehicle fire on Cemetery Road on Southampton Common at 20:34 last night.

"Firefighters used two sets of breathing apparatus and one hose reel jet to extinguish the fire which destroyed the car.

"Hampshire police were informed of the incident due to reports on the scene that the fire was set deliberately.

"After damping down, the firefighters left the scene following the stop message which came in at 21:16."
