On behalf of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) I would like to thank those who voted for us in the recent local elections.
While it is true that the Tory Government took an axe to local authority funding over the past decade, it gives me no pleasure to see that the previous Labour administration failed to protect our communities and indeed wielded that axe and devastated local services to the tune of £164 million and cut 1,000 jobs.
Our communities will learn by bitter experience that a new Tory administration will offer no alternative as austerity and further cuts will continue.
We urgently need a new direction and a route out of austerity. It is time for trade unionists, socialists and community activists to come together to build a new party of working people on a programme of fighting austerity and for socialist change.
