PLANNING chiefs are studying a proposal that aims to secure the future of a Southampton pub.

John Cooney, owner of the Cricketers Arms in Carlton Place, wants to build a four-storey extension housing three flats on the upper floors.

The ground floor would include a new pub kitchen and toilets, plus a residents' bin/cycle store.

In a statement supporting the outline application Mr Cooney says: "Covid and other commercial pressures have made the viability even more challenging, hence one of the reasons for this planning application.

"We need to diversify to survive.

"We see this as being a way to protect the pub in its near current state and at the same time offer some additional earning potential."

Mr Cooney has submitted proposals to demolish the rear section of the pub, including the existing kitchen and toilets.

But the application says 75% of the watering hole would be retained.

It adds: "In addition to new upper floor accommodation the proposal seeks to neatly separate the new residential apartments from the retained public house.

"The proposal as a whole has been designed to reflect characteristics of the neighbourhood and to limit impacts on surrounding properties."

The scheme is outlined in a Public Notice published by the city council, which will determine the application.
