A CAR has been torched and benches smashed at a beach near Southampton.

A car has been set alight and dumped at Goatee Beach in Eling.

Meanwhile, several benches have also been damaged.

A crew from Totton Fire Station raced to the scenic spot at around 11.30pm on Sunday.

A post on the Totton Fire Station Twitter page said: "Called to a fire ‘unknown origin’ in Eling. Turned out to be a car 100% destroyed by fire. Crew monitored to make sure no further action was required."

A police spokesperson added: "Just after midnight on Monday, May 17, officers received a report of a vehicle on fire on the beach at Eling, near the Tide Mill.

"The matter is currently under investigation."

The Daily Echo is awaiting comment Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.
