Rich List 2021: Hampshire's wealthiest people

The annual rich list features 250 of the wealthiest people in the country - a number of which hail from Hampshire.

UK billionaires have seen their fortunes soar by more than a fifth as they shook off the financial toll of the pandemic, according to the latest Sunday Times Rich List.

The list revealed that there are now a record 171 billionaires in the UK, with Ukranian-born Sir Leonard Blavatnik topping the pile as the richest person in the country.

From chemicals to hotels, the five billionaires and two multi-millionaires in the county have made their money through a variety of different ways.

Here are the richest people with connections to Hampshire:

Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Ratcliffe has slipped down five places on last year to 25th place on the rich list.

His current net worth is now £6.33bn down £5.82bn on 2020.

His wealth comes from Ineos, the international web of 36 chemicals businesses he founded in the late 1990s with the registered office in Lyndhurst, New Forest.

Leonie Schroder and family

The owner of Hurstbourne Park estate near Whitchurch, Leonie Schroder, and her family, remain at number 35 on the list. Their estimated wealth down is up £1.238bn to £5.215bn.

Ian and Richard Livingstone

Chewton Glen

Ian and Richard Livingstone whose company London and Regional Properties owns the five-star Chewton Glen Hotel at New Milton, are at number 27 on the list – up from 36. Their wealth increased by £2.2bn in the last twelve months making for a grand total of £6.1bn.

Georg and Emily von Opel          

The pair have invested heavily in renewable energy, are at number 99 on the list, having slipped from 89, with their wealth unchanged at £1.654bn. Georg, and Emily Von Opel, own property in Hampshire.

Raj, Tony and Harpal Matharu and family

The Matharu brothers and their families, whose Jastar Capital owns the Elvetham hotel in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire, are at number 128 on the list, down from 111. 

The wealth did not change over the last 12 months, staying at £1.3bn, despite the hotel industry being heavily impacted by national lockdowns.

Martin Moller

Unsurprisingly the Hampshire-based founder of the aircraft leasing service Nordic Aviation Capital, is down from 116 to 200. Mr Moller, is estimated to have seen his wealth drop £441million to £809million with the coronavirus impacting the industry.

Clinton, Spencer and John McCarthy      

The founders of Ringwood-based Churchill Retirement Living – are at number 230 on the list, down from 209 last year.

The family’s wealth is said to have stayed the same at £681million.
