EMERGENCY services were called yesterday after teenagers jumped into a Southampton river.

Firefighters were called at 6:36pm on Thursday after reports of three teenagers crossing a railway line and jumping into the River Test near Test Lane close to the M271.

It is said that the trio were heading out to Southampton Docks.

Fire crews from Redbridge, Cosham and Totton attended as well as police and South Central Ambulance Service.

It was later confirmed that the teenagers are safe and were able to exit the water onto the Totton Causeway.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "Think before you enter the water as all of these resources have been unavailable for other calls."

Firefighters left the scene at 7.07pm.

This comes after teenagers were spotted running across the same area of track in late march causing a train to stop.

The train driver claimed at the time that the young people were running across the tracks in front of the train as it was approaching.

Now, ward councillor for Redbridge, Cllr Sally Spicer has spoken out following Thursday's incident, calling the behaviour of the teenagers "incredibly irresponsible".

“I think there needs to be a review of the security around the railway crossing along Test Lane. I shall me calling for that review about this crossing, working with network rail and the local policing team to find a solution before we have a serious incident occur”.

"I would like to thank my emergency service colleagues for their response to this latest incident”.
