IT was one fight too many for ‘Battling Bob’, as this passionate lifelong Saints fan was known.
Bob Mcmurray, who worked for GE Aviation at Hamble for decades, has died aged 64.
Going to work for the aerospace company straight from Hamble School, Bob worked as an aircraft fitter for many years before spending time before his departure last year working in the stores.
An avid Saints supporter, Bob was a popular face at home, away and overseas fixtures. He loved meeting up on a match day with his army of friends, including fellow fans from international supporters groups. They always enjoyed a Stella, a Bacardi or a Becks if Bob’s favourite three for £5 offer was on.
Whenever he travelled abroad, Bob packed a few extra Saints shirts to hand out to the locals and made friends wherever he went.
He loved live music and would snap up tickets whenever two-tone and ska band Bad Manners were in town. In recent years, he was also a frequent visitor to The Concorde Club and enjoyed seeing a host of acts and groups there.
Bob enjoyed a quiz and was most put out when HMV closed its doors in Southampton and he would no longer be able to visit and browse their DVD selection.
He was once married to Julie and the pair reconciled as friends shortly before she died in 2017.
Bob leaves cousins in Northern Ireland and New Zealand as well as many, many friends from football and GE Aviation.
He was battling cancer and developed other complications.
Bob’s private funeral took place last week.
