AS Euro 2020 kicks off today and England prepares for its first match of the tournament against Croatia on Sunday, the Echo looks back at the tournament in 2000.
Pictures were taken at Walkabout during England’s clash with Portugal on June 12 – their first match of the competition.
Despite Paul Scholes finding the back of the net after just three minutes, England was beaten 3-2.
Their second match of the tournament came on June 17, in the form of a 1-0 victory over Germany.
Alan Shearer scored the only goal of the match in the 54th minute.
An Echo photographer visited the Litten Tree pub, Eastleigh, on June 20 for the nation’s all-important match against Romania.
All England needed was a draw, but a late penalty from Ionel Ganea in the 89th minute of the 3-2 nail-biter shattered the dreams of England fans as their team crashed out of the competition.
