A VAN has smashed into a shop after "rolling down" a Hampshire high street.

A van "went careering through" two market stalls and then into a storefront in Lymington High Street this afternoon.

According to witnesses, the unattended vehicle rolled backwards shortly before crashing into baby retailer, JoJo Maman Bébé.

Kevin Middleton, who was manning the Grater Plate stall on the market, said: “There was a van parked up opposite Tesco.

“The driver had popped out of the vehicle to get something. Unbeknownst to him, while he was away the van decided to go backwards.

“It came rolling down the hill unattended. It came down the left-hand side of the road. We thought someone was reversing and then suddenly realised there were two guys behind it shouting for everyone to get out of the way because there were loads of people here.

“It caught the edge of a stand which made it turn. It went straight through a stand and into a shop.

“Nobody was hurt thanks to those two blokes.

“It was surreal, and you freeze. You think you would just run out the way, but you don’t.

“What was amazing was to see how the public reacted. It was fantastic. They rallied round and they cleared up the stand.”

Another market stallholder said the van came down the road “at a hell of a rate”.

He said: “It went careering through the stall selling dried meats and the one selling plants and backed into the shop.
