LITTER has been left behind at a Southampton playing field after travellers set up camp last week.

Last Thursday, police confirmed that an unauthorised travellers camp had been set up at Test Park on Lower Brownhill Road, Southampton.

The camp was set up last Monday and officers attended the site to assess the situation and worked with the landowners and Southampton City Council on the incident.

Now though, the encampment has been cleared and the travellers have vacated the site, leaving behind litter including a dirty nappy according to Southampton Rugby Club who play at the park.

On Sunday, those involved with the rugby club took to the field to clean up the mess that had been left and now the area is said to be mostly cleared.

A spokesperson for the rugby club, said: “We have done our best to get most stuff but please be mindful that there may be pockets we missed. Keep an extra eye on young children and dogs.”

Redbridge ward councillor, Sally Spicer has now spoken out about the litter.

She said: “It saddens me that when travellers arrive in our open spaces in the city, they leave behind such mess and it’s down to the good will of the local community to help clear up the mess they leave behind along with the council and the university.”

Former Redbridge councillor, Lee Whitbread added: “It’s such a shame to see Test Park covered in so much litter following the recent travellers occupation of the park. Well done to all involved in clearing this mess up.”
