ACCESS and safety is due to be improved for pedestrians and cyclists on a city road.

Southampton City Council has announced that it will be making a number of changes to improve access and safety on The Avenue.

The works, which will start on Monday, are aimed at people who use the route to walk or cycle and will be located between Westwood Road and Highfield Road.

The scheme is based on both formal and informal consultation that was carried out in early 2020.

As part of the improvements, a new toucan crossing will be added across The Avenue just north of Winn Road and new continuous footways will be put in place to prioritise people walking and cycling across Winn Road, Westwood Road and the entrances to The Cowherds.

A new tactile dropped crossing will also be added across Highfield Road at the junction with The Avenue and the footpath between Winn Road and Westwood Road will undergo maintenance.

Other works will include tree management works, drainage works and upgrades to street lighting between Highfield Avenue and Winn Road.

A city council spokesperson said: “We’re continuing to review the temporary cycle lanes along The Avenue between Winchester Road and Winn Road and will decide about cycling facilities in this area over the summer.”

The work is due to be delivered over a period of ten weeks and will be split into four phases.

Information on closures and diversions will be available from the city council website whilst work is taking place.
