ROMSEY residents can still look forward to the town's festival this year.

The 2021 Romsey Festival will open with a flag raising ceremony at the Abbey on Friday July 2, with a full programme of events running from the Saturday.

Normally held every three years, this is the twelfth to be organised by an all-volunteer team of local residents.

Due to UK Government extension of Covid regulations there needed to be some changes to our extensive programme.

Concerts and free exhibitions in Romsey Abbey are not affected as access is organised on basis of current regulations, using half the buildings capacity to ensure appropriate distancing between different households attending concerts.

Liz Wagner, Festival Chair, said: "We are excited to be able to have such a varied programme for the 2021 Romsey Festival, the committee have worked really hard to ensure events are safe and comply with all Government guidance.”

All Festival Walks will proceed as planned as total walker numbers have already been restricted.

These will allow those joining to explore the waterways of Romsey and Fishlake Meadows, learn about the history of the town centre and new this year a trail that explores the railway history of Romsey.

The churches of St Mark’s Ampfield and St John’s North Baddesley have devised churchyard activity trails and quizzes for the enjoyment of family groups.

Another Festival favourite, 'La Ronde', gives an opportunity to explore ten gardens in and around the centre of Romsey. A map of locations is available on the festival website.

Mark Edgerley, Festival Vice Chair, said: "We set out to provide two weeks of events and activities for residents and visitors to Romsey, we can guarantee something enjoyable for everyone attending."

Watch out for events on the bandstand in the War Memorial Park. Visitors may need to take their own seat or sit on the grass.

The Methodist Church will be offering a drop-in exhibition not to be missed – textile panels on the theme of 'Creation' by Jacqui Parkinson and members of the local community.

A few events have been postponed with tickets transferred to a future event or refunds offered.
