A SOUTHAMPTON man has been left with a black eye after “idiots” hurled an egg from a moving car as he cycled home from work.

Peter Lever believes he could have lost his sight after an egg smashed against his head at the end of his shift.

The 44-year-old, who works as a bike courier, suffered a black eye and swelling to the left side of his face following the attack near the junction of Portswood and Kent Road.

He had been cycling away from the city centre when the egg slammed into him late on Thursday night.

The married father of one felt liquid dripping down his face and thought he was bleeding.

However, he then noticed bits of eggshell on his helmet strap.

Gathering his senses, he turned his bike around and chased after the Red Citroen C1 which drove towards the city.

Peter who called the culprits idiots said: “I think if it had got me in the eye, I would have lost my sight.

“There are no consequences for people doing this sort of thing.

Peter believes the car was travelling at around 30mph when he was hit by the egg.

Unable to catch up with it, he later phoned the police.

He slammed the offenders saying that because they were in a car, they were past childhood.

And, if given the chance to confront them, he said: “I would just explain I am a father to a young child. If they had damaged my eyesight that would have impacted me for the rest of my life.”

With a young daughter to provide for, Peter says he spends eight hours a day on the city roads as a courier.

He added: “I felt shocked. I was angry at first. I did chase after the car. Who knows what would have happened if they had stopped at the traffic lights.

“I feel a bit disappointed in humanity. Most people are good people.

“I would like them to be charged with assault because that is what it was.”

A police spokesperson said: “We received a report of an egg being thrown forcefully by a person in a Citroen car at a cyclist on Portswood Road around 12.05am on Friday, July 9. The cyclist suffered bruising to their face.”
