A SOUTHAMPTON man has told of a horror car crash after he hit a huge body of water that had flooded a motorway.

Hayden Riddett from Nursling was travelling back from Ringwood towards Southampton with his partner Maddie, 21 who was seven months pregnant at the time.

The 24-year-old sales executive said he was travelling in the outside lane of the M27 in "fairly busy" traffic on May 16, adding that he was driving a "50 to 60mph".

However, their quiet car journey turned into nightmare when the car hit what Hayden described as a "huge puddle" that sent their car spiralling off the motorway near to junction 1 and into a 40ft ditch.

Both Hayden and Maddie had to be cut free from the car, which rolled several times.

"We both had to be cut free from the car due to fear of injury, this took about two hours, thanks to the amazing emergency personnel," he explained.

"Me and my Partner were sent to the hospital, luckily she and the baby were okay, apart from soft tissue damage and bruised knees.

"The police had advised us there had been another vehicle that came off the road the same exact day just at a different time and was also due to the same circumstances.

"The other vehicle was only around 20 yards away from where we landed."

Despite only minor physical injuries, the pair say they are still struggling mentally and are experiencing PTSD.

Now, Hayden is striving to raise awareness of the "danger" of this stretch of motorway when its raining.

He continued: "This is a risk to human life on this notorious stretch of road.

"I would like to raise awareness on how dangerous this road is and how quickly things can go wrong even when driving responsibly.

"The fast lane had to be used due to traffic coming onto the motorway and we had to leave enough space for the cars in front and behind us.

"I am now ready to share my experience as I would hate to see another incident in these circumstances. "

The Daily Echo contacted Hampshire Police and Highways England for a comment but they did not respond.
