GETTING to a beach when the weather is roasting is, frankly, a must.

But living in Southampton, this isn't always very easy - until now, as the beach is coming to us!

From next week, the city centre will be transformed as deckchairs, planters and a large sandpit will take over Guildhall Square.

Named Southampton Summer Lounge, the attraction is hoped to give locals and visitors a place to relax within the centre of the city.

It has been put on by Go!Southampton, the city's Business Improvement District.

The Lounge will remain until the last week of August when it will be removed in time for Pride.

Announcing the news on Twitter, it said: "Later this week, we will be activating a section of Guildhall Square with deckchairs, planters, and a large sandpit to create the Southampton Summer Lounge giving visitors a new place to relax and enjoy the venues in the Cultural Quarter."

Giles Semper, director of Go! Southampton said: "‘We have set out to remind the people of the city that we have a lovely city square, and that it is a great place to while away a few hours and to enjoy the food and drink offered by our member businesses in that area.

"It isn’t on the same scale as our Seaside in the Square but nearly everything can be re-used. So I hope that our sandpit, our planters and our deckchairs will appear in this and other locations on many occasions in the future.

"Once again we have drawn on the design talents of local architect Darren Bray and local artist Amanda Moore, who has created an exciting new artwork based on detailing from the front of the Guildhall."

He added: "People will need to wait a few days for all the elements to be in place. Outdoor furniture is in short supply at the moment and has been since the first reopening. But it should all be there by the end of next week.

"See you in the Square!"

Readers may remember something similar put on a few years ago, when a beach was created in the same location.

Daily Echo:

Put on by Go!Southampton back in 2019, visitors were able to enjoy a variety of summer-inspired drinks, and take part in sandcastle competitions.

Other activities then on offer included an outdoor cinema, live music, comedy and theatre in association with Nuffield Southampton Theatres.
