EVERY summer - without fail - we all have that one friend who asks: "I wonder if it's hot enough to cook an egg out here?"

With the heatwave comes longer evenings, beach days, BBQs and that age old question of whether or not the ground will ever get hot enough to fry an egg.

Well, this year, we tried it so you don't have to.

And, to put it bluntly, it was a total disaster.

I think going into this we all knew there was only going to be one outcome - a sticky, smelly mess outside my home on the pavement. But what's a heatwave without a little bit of silliness?

I had two methods in my attempt to cook an egg in the sun which consisted of a frying pan with a drizzle of oil left in the baking sun for a few hours, and a hot drain cover.

Neither were a success.

Both eggs plopped onto the surface and did absolutely nothing.

With highs of 26C in Bitterne today it wasn't exactly the hottest we've had it this week, but standing on the tarmac with bare feet wasn't bearable for too long.

What have we learnt from this exactly? I'm not too sure.

But, please, stop asking if we can cook eggs on the pavement - we all knew it was never going to happen.
