ALTHOUGH Yates Southampton may be closed, it’s due to reopen once more on July 27.
The British pub chain – the oldest in Britain – began in 1884 when brothers Peter and Simon Yates opened the first Yates’s Wine Lodge in Oldham, Lancashire.
Beforehand, Peter went to Spain to learn about wine and Simon went to the US to learn about business methods.
In the early days Yates’s invented and sold its own drink – Blobs. They consisted of sweet Australian wine, brandy, sugar and hot water.
The pictures in the gallery above were taken at Yates Southampton through the years.
