A huge fire broke out at a waste centre in Yokesford Hill Industrial Estate near Romsey in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Multiple crews have been on scene dealing with the blaze. The road is closed.

There were eight crews on scene at the height of the incident including firefighters from Romsey, Redbridge, Eastleigh, St Mary's, Andover, Beaulieu, Bishops Waltham, Hightown, Hamble, Hardley, Fordingbridge, Portchester, Alton and Ringwood.

People nearby were told to avoid the area and keep their windows closed due to the smoke.

A spokesperson for St Mary's station said: "All St Mary's appliances along with many other HIOWFRS appliances are currently helping to extinguish 35,000 tonnes of household waste in Romsey. Excellent assistance from the ACE JCB drivers too", they said on social media.

 

A fire service spokesperson said: "The cause of the fire is unknown at this point.

"There are 18 different crews attending the incident and it is taking place at a waste centre."

They said six jets are currently in use and a crew changeover had taken place around 10.30am. They are expected to be on scene for some time.

Elsewhere, Hampshire fire crews also dealt with a house fire in Andover, caused by a lightning strike.
