HE IS the most successful sailor in Olympic history.

Former Lymington resident Sir Ben Ainslie won medals at five consecutive Olympics from 1996 onwards, including gold at each of the four Games held between 2000 and 2012.

Now 44-year-old Sir Ben is to be granted the honorary freedom of the Beaulieu River - one of the few privately-owned waterways in the world.

He will be presented with a certificate by Lord Montagu at a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of Buckler's Hard Yacht Harbour and the completion of its £2m redevelopment.

Other guests will include legendary round-the-world yachtsman Sir Chay Blyth, who was granted the freedom of the river by Lord Montagu’s father when the marina opened in 1971.

Sir Chay, 81, said: “It was a privilege to be asked to perform the original opening.

"I am glad the river has kept its charm and is as special today as it was during my first visit over half a century ago."

As part of the anniversary celebration Beaulieu River berth and mooring holders have been invited to a traditional style regatta.

Joining them on the water will be members of the Beaulieu River Sailing Club, which was created 90 years ago by Lord Montagu’s grandmother Pearl.

Russell Bowman, managing director of Beaulieu Enterprises, said the yacht harbour had been provided with new and improved facilities while preserving the natural beauty that had made the river one of most desired locations on the south coast.

The harbour has gained 66 new berths, including those able to cater for vessels up to 20m long. Other changes include upgraded electrical services, improved WiFi and a new visitor area.

Gosport-based Marina Projects managed the redevelopment while the work was carried out by Fareham-based Walcon Marine, which undertook the original yacht harbour build 50 years ago.

The Beaulieu Estate worked with agencies including Natural England and the Environment Agency to continue to protect the river’s unique habitats and species.

The river has been owned by the Montagu family for more than 400 years.

The Hon Mary Montagu-Scott, Lord Montagu's sister and commodore of Beaulieu River Sailing Club, said: “The Beaulieu River is my favourite place on earth.

"There are many sailors like me who find it an absolute joy to sail on such an unspoilt river, with its estuary creeks and wooded banks."
