A WATERFRONT pub could be sporting a new retractable canopy should plans be approved.

The Jolly Sailor in on Lands End Road in Bursledon has applied for planning permission to allow them to replace an existing canvas canopy structure on the jetty with an updated and modernised retractable canopy for their outdoor seating and dining area.

The retractable canopy will prove shelter outside when needed on grey, drizzly days but can be pulled back to allow punters to enjoy the sunshine and clear nights throughout the spring, summer and early autumn.

The current structure has been in place for several years and is due a major upgrade.

The application states there will be no changed to the grounds of the pub and no change to access.

There is also no proposals to change the seating capacity as a result of the development.

The Jolly Sailor is a grade II listed building which is two storeys high. It has a jetty at the rear of the pub which extends into the River Hamble and is used as an outdoor dining and seating area.

The plans state that the visual impact of the proposals will “enhance” the character and appearance of the area.

The pub is said to attract hundreds of visitors a year, not just for its idyllic location on the waterfront but also for its history and TV fame.

Built in the 1700s, the pub was also the set of the BBC series Howards’ Way in 1980s.

The pub is owned by the Dorset-based brewery Hall and Woodhouse.
