RESIDENTS are being asked for their views on a new discount food store in Totton.

Aldi has launched a public consultation for a new supermarket on a site off the A36 Salisbury Road, between Testwood Park and the AFC Totton Football Club’s ground, and opposite the Laurel Care Home.

Their proposals include a new food store, customer car parking, and 19,000 sq ft of additional employment space.

A spokesperson said the store would offer “improved shopping choice, high-quality products and value for money” for residents.

Daily Echo:

The proposals would represent a multi-million-pound investment in the local area.

It would also deliver up to 40 full and part-time job opportunities.

Lee McCandless, property director for Aldi said: “We have been working on proposals for the site for some time and look forward to hearing the views of the local community prior to submitting an application to New Forest District Council.

“Our proposals represent an opportunity to build a new discount community food store, improving local shopping choice for residents in Totton.

“The proposed store would make use of a currently under-utilised site, which has been earmarked for development and would provide a sustainable future for it which will attract further inward investment to Totton.

Daily Echo:

“Electric charging points and cycle spaces will be included to encourage sustainable travel and the site will be landscaped with new trees planted.

“The new store would also create a range of permanent employment opportunities for local residents, all of which would be paid above the National Living Wage.”

In June, the company issued a list of places they were targeting in Hampshire.

They included Totton, as well as Eastleigh, Hedge End, Lymington, New Milton, Ringwood, Southampton and Winchester.

At the time, Ciaran Aldridge, national property director at Aldi UK, said: “Shoppers are increasingly looking to get unbeatable prices on their weekly shop without compromising on quality.

“That’s why, more so than ever, we’re keen to explore all opportunities to open new stores across the country.”

As part of the public consultation, Aldi has launched a dedicated website where residents can give their views and be kept updated on the progress of its proposals.
