New research has suggested Southampton has one of the highest numbers of properties selling for more than a million pounds outside of London.

A year's worth of data appears to suggest Southampton follows Oxford as the postcode with the most homes selling for more than a million pounds outside the capital.

Brighton is in third place.

The research from Thomas Sanderson explored how many homes are selling for more than a million pounds in different locations across the UK.

After analysing property data for the past 12 months, it was revealed that unsurprisingly London has the highest number of properties selling for over a million pounds.

Greater London had 7,800 properties sold for over a million pounds in the past 12 months and 2,417 of these were in South West London (SW).

In Southampton, 7,800 houses were sold in the past 12 months and of these, 260 sold for over a million pounds.

Richard Petrie, home expert at Thomas Sanderson said: “We already know it’s hard to buy a property in London but the research emphasises just how tough, as over 1 in 9 properties in greater London sell for over a million pounds.

"In general properties are more expensive in the south but the north is not to be discounted as counties like Rutland, Cheshire and North Yorkshire have all found themselves in the top half of the table.

"It just goes to show that all over the UK it is becoming increasingly harder for first time buyers to get on the property ladder.”
