SOUTHAMPTON pop star, artist and poet Greg Gilbert is in the care of nurses at Mountbatten Hampshire hospice.

The Delays frontman has sent a heartfelt message to his legions of fans worldwide via social media updating them on his cancer treatment.

Father of two Greg said: "This isn't a post I ever thought I'd have to write but it suddenly seems necessary. I have, unfortunately, been taken off of treatment and am now being treated solely for pain relief. The pains are mostly under control and the nurses here are nothing less than angels.

Daily Echo:

But I'm now in an uncertain future where I don't know how long I have and what the days will look like. I'm trying to get home for a couple of hours, energy willing, and hope I can still find the time to create.

"I'm impossibly lucky to have the family and friends I do, as well as all the considerate souls out in cyberspace who I've never met but regularly beam me their good vibes. I still believe in magic, the power of a good gesture and laughter. I want to fill the days ahead with all of these and so much more."

Greg sent love and thanks to fans, who responded in kind with thousands of messages of support.

Greg was diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer that had spread to his lungs in November 2016 at the age of 39.

Daily Echo:

His now wife Stacey Heale launched a huge fundraising campaign to pay for lifesaving treatment not available on the NHS, which passed its initial £100,000 target in 48 hours, becoming one of the fastest ever campaigns on the Go Fund Me crowdfunding website.

The Give4Greg campaign went on to raise more than double the initial target.

Greg is well known to music fans thanks to his band, Delays, whose hits include Hey Girl, Nearer than Heaven, Lost in a Melody and Long Time Coming.

He has also made a name for himself in the worlds of both poetry and art. His incredibly detailed biro miniatures have been exhibited extensively.
