ONE area of Southampton has seen cases more than doubling in just one week.

Woolston saw 64 fresh cases recorded in the week-to August 4, up 37 (137%), the latest Public Health England data has revealed.

The stats also show that one in every 142 people in the area tested positive for Covid in that seven-day period.

Out of Southampton’s other 30 Covid clusters, 19 saw decreases in cases, with eight recording rises. Three saw no change.

Southampton as a whole recorded 955 cases, down 61 cases or -6%. This left the city with an average infection rate of 377.7, or one case per 265 people.

In comparison to Hampshire, the area recorded 3,315 cases, up 89 cases or 2.8% in the same time period. It was left with an infection rate of 238.6, or one case per every 419 people. The Hampshire data does not include cases from Southampton or Portsmouth.

Clusters are shown when there are three or more new cases reported at any one time.

Anywhere with between zero and two cases are shown in white in order to "protect the privacy of individuals and prevent disclosure", the Government organisation states.
