THE family of a Saints superfan have raised £1,000 for charity in his memory.

David Parkin, from Millbrook, known by many as a “massive” Saints fan was one of the founding members of the Southampton Fan Club in the 1970s.

The security officer passed away in February of this year after suffering a stroke in Southampton General Hospital ahead of an operation.

He had battled cancer for seven years having been diagnosed with Myeloma in 2013.

Tributes from fellow Saints fans poured in, with many saying they remembered him on his way to matches “sitting at the back of coaches, playing music and telling stories.”

In a nod to his ‘life-long’ support of Southampton FC, his family has donated £1000 to the Saints Foundation, raised through the auctioning of his football shirts.

His sister Linda Haysom presented the cheque to Saints Foundation ambassador Matt Le Tissier at St Mary’s stadium on Saturday.

Linda said her brother was “loved by many.”

In a message to all who donated, Linda said: “David would have been so proud to know to know that you have rallied around his memory to support so many worthy causes.

“I am humbled by your generosity and thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

Friend of David and member of the Facebook group Saints Archive, Leon Burton helped organise the donation after being contacted by representatives of the Saints Foundation.

He said: “David was such a passionate Saints supporter and always embraced the Saints Foundation.”

“His sister Linda thought that any proceeds made from selling his football shirts [should go] to the Saints Foundation.”

“[The Saints Foundation] also gave us complimentary tickets to watch Saints play Athletico Bilbao which was a kind gesture.”

Around £1,000 was raised towards David’s funeral, more than £750 for Macmillan Cancer Support and £1700 for Teenage Cancer Trust.

Clothes donations were also made to Two Saints homeless shelter in Southampton.
