A BUSY Southampton road is to close again as further repairs are carried out.

SGN is progressing with the replacement of its gas main as part of Hampshire County Council’s ongoing work to repair the structures that carry the A35 at Redbridge.

Most of the new main will require open excavation to remove sections of the old abandoned main or to install new apparatus.

Closures and details:

  • The north footway of the A35 Redbridge Causeway is closed until Friday, September 3. A fully signed diversion for pedestrians, cyclists and other users is in place via the south footway.
  • The left-hand lane of the eastbound A35 carriageway will be closed from the approach to the Totton on-slip until the start of the off-slip to the M271 Redbridge Roundabout. The Totton on-slip will be narrowed / shortened and will merge with the single lane of eastbound A35 traffic in the right-hand lane. A temporary 30mph speed limit will be in force and the works will be carried out during the day only, but this will include weekends and will utilise extended hours (6:30am–8:30pm). The work may be noisy at times and the traffic management will remain in place outside these hours for safety reasons.
  • A full closure of the A35 eastbound off-slip to M271 Redbridge Roundabout will be in place from 8pm Friday 20 August until Tuesday 31 August, with a signed diversion taking road users to the next junction at the Millbrook Roundabout and back onto the westbound carriageway of the A35. The work will be carried out during the day only, but this will include weekends and will utilise extended hours (6:30am–8:30pm). The work may be noisy at times and the traffic management will remain in place outside these hours for safety reasons. Some bus services will be affected.
  • Test Lane was re-opened to traffic on 30 July. However, sections of the road will be reduced to single lane running under two-way traffic lights at times until mid-September. The work will be carried out during the day only, during normal working hours, and may be noisy at times. Final connection / commissioning works will be required in October. However, these have yet to be finalised.
  • Sections of Gover Road will be reduced to single lane running under the control of 2-way traffic lights at times from Tuesday 31 August until mid-October. The work will be carried out during the day only, during normal working hours, and may be noisy at times.
  • A further lane closure of the eastbound A35 is planned for mid-October, to carry out final connections / commissioning of the new main. The requirements / timings for those works have yet to be finalised.
