SOUTHAMPTON residents are suffering sleepless nights due to an invasion of maggots.

‘Thousands’ of squirming maggots have infested a block of flats in Lockerley Crescent.

They can be seen wriggling around in the communal area of the council-run building in the Millbrook area of the city.

Alison Farmer, who lives on the ground floor, says the problem has been going on for the last four years.

Every summer the maggots appear as temperatures rise, she adds.

The 59-year-old grandmother of four is now demanding that the council finds a permanent solution to the ‘disgusting’ problem.

Speaking to a Daily Echo reporter, she said: “We have just been infested by the maggots. Invaded by them.

“We have used paint-stripper, bleach, Detol [to get rid of them].

“It’s just gross.”

Alison says she is embarrassed to have visitors and that the maggots outside the flats are shameful.

When her grandsons visit, she has to ask them to take off their shoes so they don’t bring the creatures into her apartment.

However, maggots have still been able to get into some of the flats.

She added: “It started about four years ago and we have reported it to the council. It’s horrible. It’s embarrassing having visitors. When we have had a hot day there are thousands.

“It’s 2021 we should not be living like this. I dread going out in the morning.”

Although the council has inspected the drains and surrounding area, Alison has slammed the local authority saying “false promises” have been made and that nothing has been done.

She believes the maggots are coming from a cracked underground drain.

Alison said: “Why don’t they find out what’s down there. I have begged them to come out.

“We would just like to see it sorted.”

Meanwhile, neighbour Yvette McCarthy, 57, who has lived in the Lockerley Crescent block for nine years, said the situation makes her cringe.

“It gives you sleepless nights. You do not want to let the kids downstairs to play”, she added.

A Southampton City Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of this issue and our maintenance teams have been working hard to identify the cause and provide a solution. Cleaning teams have also been visiting daily. We are keeping tenants informed both directly and via letter and encourage anyone with questions or concerns to please contact the Local Housing Office in the first instance.”
