POLICE in Southampton are investigating multiple reports of laser pens being shone at ships entering Southampton waters.

Described by officers as “dangerous”, the incidents took place on August 12 and 13 but police believe more boats may have been targeted.

One vessel was described by police as a cruise liner and another was a container ship. Police have warned that the behaviour is a “serious offence” that could result in a maximum of five years in prison under the Laser Misuse (Vehicles) Act 2018.

A post from Hampshire Constabulary’s Marine Unit posted on Twitter on Sunday (Aug 15) read: “We are investigating a number of incidents in which lasers have been shone at commercial ships entering Southampton Water.

“Not only is this dangerous but the offence carries a penalty of up to 5 years in prison.

They urged people to report any relevant information to the police - “If you see anyone doing this please call immediately and report it.”

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary also confirmed that police are working with the Southampton Harbour Master to identify whether any other ships had been affected.

The statement added: “The danger is that the laser can blind or dazzle the captain of a vessel on the bridge at crucial points of the journey as they navigate into the area of Southampton Water.

“We will not tolerate the misuse of lasers in this way and officers continue with their enquiries.”

A spokesperson for Associated British Ports said (ABP) said: “ABP is aware of these offences and we pass any reports from ships to the police.

They added that ABP were “not directly involved in the police investigation.”

The statement added: “We would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that the safety of vessels, their crews and passengers is of utmost importance.

“[We] remind people to avoid activities that may compromise the safety of others.”

Anyone with information is advised to contact police by calling 101.
