NEIGHBOURS have hit back at plans to build a car park on the site of a recently demolished bungalow.

Residents of Gover Road say the construction of the parking area will worsen traffic and impact the local area.

But applicant Adams Morey says the 12-space car park will be for its staff, and only be used 8am-6pm on weekdays.

The Southampton-based commercial vehicle firm currently employs 60 workers, with 24 new staff set to join, council documents say.

Currently, staff that cannot park in the firm's main car park are forced to park along Gover Road, with bosses saying that these new spaces will remove this need, and therefore improve traffic flow.

Southampton City Council has earmarked the plans for approval.

However, city councillor for Redbridge Amanda Guest says the plans "will not be in keeping with the local residential area".

In her objection letter, she added: "The residents of Gover Road and the neighbouring roads have suffered severely over the past few years with several large developments having been built close by."

She added that the plans would also "severely impact the privacy of the residents living next to it".

Resident Kathleen Hooper raised huge concern over the scheme, adding: "We do not need more traffic through here and with no amenities in this area and no transport to shops we feel ignored already and doubt we will be listened to this time.

"This little world of bungalows need to be remembered and preserved."

Fellow neighbour Daniel Wing also raised concern at the effect of the car park on the value of their homes.

A decision on the plans, which have received a total on 19 objections, will be made at a planning meeting on Tuesday.
