POLICE have issued an appeal for witnesses after a pensioner was attacked and robbed in a Hampshire town.

The 83-year-old woman was hit from behind and fell to the ground in the attack, which took place in Avenue Road, Lymington, yesterday afternoon.

The woman was taken to Southampton General Hospital where she was treated for wounds to her face and a fractured cheekbone.

She may also lose sight in her right eye.

Detective Inspector Lloyd Tobin, of New Forest CID, said: "This is an extremely nasty incident involving a vulnerable member of the community.

"This is very rare occurrence in Lymington, a usually quiet and peaceful area.

"I would appeal to members of the community in the town centre yesterday afternoon who may have witnessed the incident, or may have any information which could assist us to identify the offender, to contact us at the earliest opportunity."
