PLANS for new accommodation to support homeless people in Southampton have been unveiled.

The proposals show that the new building will be one-storey in height and managed by charity Society of St James.

If approved, it will be situated at the rear of a two-storey semi-detached home on Rose Road - which is also looked after by the homelessness charity.

The site is currently managed by The Society of St James, the Southampton-based charity which provides support to homeless people in the city.

According to the plans submitted to Southampton City Council, a shared kitchen, a lounge and five bedrooms could be built at the back of the existing building.

The two car parking spaces at the site would be retained while the existing office would be demolished to make way for the new building.

The proposals  put forward by The Society of St James are set to be discussed by the Planning and Rights of Way Panel at Southampton City Council on Tuesday.

Some concerns have been raised over the impact of the development on noise and anti-social behaviour.

But planners said further details regarding the management of the site will be provided at next week’s meeting.

In official documents published ahead of the meeting planning bosses said: “When taking into account the existing accommodation, the proposal will result in 14 occupants across the whole site. Whilst the proposal results in the loss of garden space the proposal provides longer term accommodation for a vulnerable group of people which is welcome. The proposal has been well-designed to balance the need to maximise the use of the site whilst appearing as an attractive and subordinate addition within the surrounding area. ”

The meeting will begin at 4pm.
