A POPULAR Southampton café has been put up for sale as the current owner is due to retire.

Under current ownership, Jackpot Café has been open on Portswood Road since 2010, attracting a wide customer base to come and try its traditional breakfasts, as well as taking on a special breakfast eating challenge.

The original Jackpot Café is said to have opened in 1960 opposite Arnold Road, but was taken over by current owner Eddie Peckham in 1982, before it was moved to its current location.

Now though, the site has been put up for sale as 72-year-old Eddie looks to retire to spend more time with his wife at their home in Locks Heath.

Listed on Rightmove, the café is currently advertised for £31,000 and is described as having an "excellent reputation", a "loyal customer base, low overheads, huge growth opportunity" and based in a "prime position".

After being in catering for 58 years, owner Eddie said: "I think I've finished my apprenticeship. I've got a very good customer basis, lots of regular customers who have been coming, basically since I first opened. I've got customers still coming in that first came in 1982.

"The thing I'll miss is the customers and the fact that every week I get customers saying that its the best breakfast they've ever had. When you get that, it sort of gives you the incentive to carry on for a bit but unfortunately I've got to hang my boots up now.

"It will still be the Jackpot cafe so hopefully my regulars will carry on here many years after I've retired."

Once the lease has been changed over, Eddie says he plans to stay around for a week or so to introduce the new owners to the customer base and help in the transition, but says he hopes the café will stay very much as it is at the moment, with improvements as times passes.

One breakfast the café is known for is called the Hermon Challenge Breakfast which includes two eggs, two bacon rashers, two sausages, two slices of black pudding, a portion of mushrooms, baked beans and tomatoes.

Those who finish the breakfast which equates to nearly 3,000 calories are then given a shirt to show their achievement.
