HAMPSHIRE actor Jeff Stewart, better known as The Bill's PC Reg Hollis, is recovering after reportedly slashing his wrists on set.
The soap stalwart, who has played PC Hollis since 1984, was released from hospital yesterday following the incident, which happened at the studios in Merton, south London.
Jeff, the only remaining original cast member, was told his contract would not be renewed.
He was then said to have gone back to his dressing room and tried to cut his wrists.
Security guards at the studios raised the alarm and the veteran TV copper was taken to nearby St George's Hospital, in Tooting.
Jeff, 52, was born in Scotland but grew up in Southampton, where he attended Redbridge Community School and Itchen College.
Yesterday both schools sent out messages of support to their former pupil.
Redbridge Community School head teacher Richard Schofield said: "We were very concerned to hear about Jeff. We hope he makes a full and speedy recovery."
A spokesman for Itchen College said: "We have always enjoyed Jeff's work and are proud of his association with the college.
"We send him our very best wishes and our thoughts are with him during this time."
A spokesman for The Bill confirmed that the incident had taken place after Jeff, whose mother still lives in Millbrook, was told his character had been axed from the show.
