THE locations of potential new 20mph speed limits in Southampton have been revealed as part of a bid to improve safety in the city.

A fresh pedestrian crossing and improved pavements are also set to be installed in the area, the city council has confirmed.

The area between Winchester Road, Bassett Avenue and Burgess Road  to the west and Bassett Avenue, Burgess Road (east) and Glen Eyre Road to the east could see a number of changes over the coming months in a bid to improve road safety.

Detailed plans are yet to be drawn up.

But Cllr Jeremy Moulton, cabinet member for growth at Southampton City Council, said the changes could include the introduction of a 20mph speed limit along Butterfield Road as well as a pedestrian crossing on Winchester Road near the junction with Butterfield Road.

Other roads in the area could also see a 20mph speed limit while pavements in the area could be improved.

The plans are set to be finalised after the public consultation, which launched yesterday.

Residents are being encouraged to share their views.

Cllr Moulton said: “We have begun engaging with communities in the east and west of Bassett as part of a collaborative project to improve the safety of walking and cycling in the area. We strongly believe that the best ideas always come out of the community and are now running a perception survey inviting local residents and businesses to share their views and suggestions for the neighbourhood.”

The survey will run until October1.

“The findings of this survey will help us identify community-led improvements to make the area safer; reduce traffic; and help people get around easily and more sustainably in their local neighbourhoods,” Cllr Moulton said.

Cllr Sarah Bogle, shadow cabinet member for transport, said: “Whatever is proposed, whether it’s an Active Travel Zone or something else, then would urge local residents to engage with it and for the administration to clarify what issues it is trying to address and how it links to other schemes. Road safety and traffic accidents continue to be particularly high in Southampton.”
