SERVICES have returned to normal and all debris has been cleared after a check-in kiosk was destroyed at a Southampton ferry port on Monday.

On Monday at around 1pm, a lorry struck a check-in kiosk at the Red Funnel ferry terminal, flattening the structure with three members of staff inside.

The cross-Solent operator claimed that the trio had not suffered any significant injuries but despite this, all three still required treatment from ambulance staff, with one being taken to hospital.

Now Red Funnel says the three who were injured are now all at home though and the wreckage left by the incident has been cleared.

A spokesperson told the Echo: “Our services have returned to normal and all debris has been cleared from Terminal 1 in Southampton.

“We are currently checking in passengers manually due to the equipment damaged, which may cause a slight delay in boarding.

“We are continuing to fully support our three colleagues involved in Monday’s incident, who are all resting at home.”

Customers are being advised to keep an eye on their departure and arrival times on the Red Funnel website.

Daily Echo: Kiosk flattened at Red Funnel ferry terminal in Southampton after a lorry hit it on Monday, September 6, 2021.

The flattened kiosk was cordoned off quickly after the incident with staff and passengers quickly running to the aid of those inside and police attending.

The spokesperson added that the company is working on a solution to fix the check-in kiosk at Terminal 1 but in the mean time there are two temporary kiosks in place allowing them to check people in as normal.

The company was not able to give an update on any safety measures that could be brought in following the incident however.

Southampton Itchen MP, Royston Smith said that he is “confident” that the company will take action to stop this happening again though.

He said: “The operation of red funnel is very safe. I’ve spoken to them in the past for all sorts of things and they are very concious of safety.

“Sometimes these things come from left field and you realise that more could be done and I know full well that Red Funnel will take the action that they need to if that is the case but it does sound to me like it was a bit of an unusual occurrence.

“But it does demonstrate that it can happen and they need to put something in place to make sure it doesn’t happen again. I’m pretty confident they’ll do that.”
