MAJOR plans for additional train services that could change the way people move in and around Southampton have been unveiled.

New train services linking Southampton, Eastleigh and Fareham could be created within the next five years, it has been revealed.

It comes as transport bosses said the area is currently served by hourly services.

But under the new plans there could be train services every 30 minutes in each direction.

The additional trains would stop at a number of stations including Woolston, Hamble, Botley and Swaythling.

The move has been described as a “golden opportunity” and has been backed by Southampton City Council.

It comes as transport chiefs said the scheme  would improve access across the region, reduce congestion and provide transport alternatives.

The proposals have been put forward by Three Rivers Community Rail Partnership – a group that works to promote and improve train services.

Its chairman Nick Farthing said: “We have a golden opportunity here to increase services. You are not taking trains away, it will be additional trains. It is doable. The benefit would be that you would have an alternative to the motorway. It will take people out their cars. This would give us a cost effective solution to congestion in the area without building new railways. It will totally improve access across the region.”

The scheme is at an early stage and further details including the cost are yet to be revealed.

Cllr Jeremy Moulton, cabinet member for growth at Southampton City Council, said the authority backs improvements to train frequency.

He said that hourly train services are not “really practical”.

But he added: “If we can get it to 30 minutes it becomes a really viable alternative. The benefits would be making rail a far more attractive and practical option as an alternative to the car.”

The proposals have also been backed by local MPs.

Royston Smith, MP for Southampton Itchen , said to be “very pleased” to hear of the proposals.

He said: “More trains for our area is good news and will help to reduce traffic and emissions. The fact that there will be frequent trains and no need for a vast infrastructure upgrades will allow for a more cost effective rail upgrade in the local area.”

Paul Holmes, MP for Eastleigh, added: “Any proposals that improve services in my constituency would be strongly welcomed, particularly serving stations in the southern half of my constituency. ”

Cllr Satvir Kaur, leader of the opposition at Southampton City Council, said Labour will support the proposals.

“It is important that travel is easier, greener and cheaper for people. Public transport is becoming increasingly more important,” she added.
