Andy Jones has raised more than £800 for Southampton Action by taking on the city's marathon.

It was one of the highest donations yet received by the relatively new charity, which works to support refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable groups in Southampton.

They collect donations of clothes and toiletries and provide practical assistance to those looking for sanctuary in the city.

Andy, a 47-year-old nurse at Wessex Nuffield Hospital in Chandlers Ford, completed his fifth marathon on a very hot day in a time of 4 hours and 2 minutes.

The keen runner from Dibden Purlieu told the Daily Echo: "I found out about the charity recently. I was moved to help after seeing the plight of refugees from Afghanistan and having seen on the TV people crossing the channel looking for a better life for their families."

The city was buzzing with energy as the ABP Southampton Marathon and its associated half marathon, 10k and fun runs returned to Southampton after a Covid induced hiatus since April 2019.

Thousands of runners pounded the streets, raising money for a host of good causes or challenging themselves and spurring on others.

The two-lap racecourse offers a spectacular route, including green parks, shoreline and riverside views, beginning and ending at Southampton Guildhall. Runners seem to find the thigh burning romp over Itchen Bridge particularly challenging.

Runners are already being encouraged to sign up for the 2022 event, which is due to return to its previous slot and take place on April 24. You can help boost the coffers of Macmillan, Southampton Hospital Charity or the charity of your choice.
