A CAR fire has damaged a major Hampshire road causing delays for motorists today.

Emergency repairs are underway on the A31 this morning. 

Traffic information service ROMANSE confirmed at 11.06am that one lane is closed and delays are approximately one hour long.

Queues are tailing back near to Burley.

It comes after a car burst into flames on the eastbound carriageway at around 8pm last night.

A crew from Ringwood Fire Station raced to the scene near Stoney Cross, however, the vehicle was completely destroyed.

The blaze was under control by around 9.15pm.

According to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service, the incident involved a single vehicle and the police were alerted.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "We were called at 8.05pm yesterday (September 23) to reports of a car on fire in the eastbound carriageway of the A31 near Stoney Cross.

"No injuries were reported to us and we are not treating the incident as suspicious at this time."
