IT HAS retained its title as Britain's biggest festival of boating.

Southampton International Boat Show saw a record 13,760 take to the water.

This was an increase of 25 per cent when compared to 2019 – the 2020 instalment was cancelled due to Covid.

The event showcased over 350 marine brands with more than 500 boats on display. There were 88,000 visitors across the 10 days – down 14 per cent on 2019.

But organisers say this is still a "fantastic achievement for a Covid year".

“Additional Covid-19 measures were introduced at the show to help keep everyone safe, including proof of negative lateral flow tests," said Ian Cooke, president of British Marine.

"Thanks to these extra measures, visitors felt comfortable to attend and the Boat Show has been a phenomenal success."

The star-studded event saw former Queen of the Jungle Georgia Toffolo join Olympians from the British Sailing Team for a selfie; Jay Kay - aka Jamiroquai - was spotted boat shopping; Made in Chelsea’s Andy Jordan was snapped giving flyboarding a go; and Premiership footballer Bukayo Saka attended.

Lesley Robinson, CEO of British Marine added, “This year’s show has been a resounding success. We’ve put even more emphasis into appealing to visitors of all backgrounds and interests, ages and ability than ever before and welcomed everyone from boating newbies to seasoned sailors and watersports enthusiasts.”

“We made significant changes to the layout for 2021 with the introduction of Zones and being able to facilitate first timers trying out water sports. Knowing we have been able to introduce young people to the world of watersports is incredible.”
