SOUTHAMPTON care staff who are not fully vaccinated will be redeployed into different roles.

It is believed that four of the city council's employees will have to change jobs due to issues surrounding the jab.

From November 11 2021, anyone entering a care home, including workers, will need to be fully vaccinated unless they are exempt under the regulations.

Those being redeployed will be sent to different sector based on their skills and preferred choice of future career.

"Currently within Southampton City Council we are actively attempting to redeploy any of our care staff who are currently not vaccinated, as well as those who do not wish to be vaccinated," said a spokesperson for the authority.

"At present we do not have precise up to date knowledge of the provider market although we are carefully monitoring it as all care workers who come into contact with residents need to be vaccinated. Vaccination offers the best protection against the virus for both staff and care home residents."

Uncertainty surrounds the exact number of those being redeployed.

The spokesperson added: "We believe that there are four people to be redeployed, however, we cannot be sure about the timeline yet, as they can still self-certificate their exemption.

"Redeployment is dependent on their skills and their preferred choice of future career."

Last week the Echo reported that not a single Hampshire County Council employee has been let go for refusing the Covid vaccine.

But a trade union warned this could change in the coming weeks.

Callum Williamson, secretary of Hampshire UNISON, explained: "Put simply, the deadline for non-exempt care staff to have received both vaccinations is November 11 and that is why there haven't been dismissals at Hampshire County Council yet.

"We'll obviously be working with them to try and prevent people losing their jobs wherever we can (for example, through exploring redeployment and through making sure informed discussions about the vaccine are taking place)."

Trade unions across the country are calling on the government to scrap the 'no jab, no job' rule for care home staff.
