PLANS have been submitted for the construction of another 5G mast in Southampton.

CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Ltd has asked for planning permission to install new telecommunications equipment on land at Raymond Road, adjacent to the Atherley Bowling Club.

The new equipment would include a 15m high monopole and equipment cabinets as well as ancillary works to facilitate the areas 5G network.

This comes just weeks after Network Three requested planning permission for the creation of a 5G mast opposite the Sainsbury’s Local store in Hill Lane nearby.

In the application documents, it says: “There is now a requirement to upgrade the CK Hutchison Networks (UK) Ltd (Three) Network to provide improved coverage and capacity, most notably in relation to 5 services.

“The height of the pole has been kept down to the absolute minimum capable of providing the required essential new 5G coverage.

“There are existing tall vertical columns (streetlights), helping the monopole blend into the street scene. The closest residential property does not directly overlook the site.”

But so far, since the application was submitted to the city council on September 6, four objections have been made with people raising concerns about the “intrusive” location, the visual appearance of the mast, as well as “potential health concerns”.

Ward councillor for the area, Satvir Kaur said: “As a ward councillor for Shirley, I fully support local residents’ overwhelming objection to this new 5G Mast application.

“As before, I hope the planning panel reject this application as they did for something similar on Winchester Road.”

Residents are able to have their say as part of a consultation, which ends on October 8.
