POLICE have traced a man who lost part of his finger in an incident outside a block of flats in Southampton.

Officers say the 28-year-old is being treated in hospital in Salisbury after seeking medical help.

Police launched a search after what they initially described as a severed finger was found in a parking area in Lower Bannister Street, behind a block of flats which fronts on to Bedford Place.

The grim find was made at around midnight on Friday, going into yesterday.

Earlier today police said: "Investigations have found a man lost the finger in an accident while trying to climb a fence after getting trapped in a courtyard area.

"However he wandered off after being given a towel by a resident.

"Officers are concerned for his welfare due to the trauma of what happen and as he appears to have lost a lot of blood."

Police have now issued an update.

A spokesman said: "We are pleased to say that the man who lost part his finger in Southampton has been traced.

"The 28-year-old is receiving treatment at hospital in Salisbury for his injury after seeking medical assistance himself."
