WORKS are set to start on a Southampton ring road next week.

From Monday, two months of work is due to start on the A3024, Northern Ring Road.

What closures will be in place?

Coming as part of the council’s Transforming Cities Fund, the work will see a full closure of East Park Terrace for two weeks from October 11 with a further two nights of closures on Charlotte Place roundabout.

Grosvenor Square will also be closed between Cumberland Place and Park Lane with some lane closures on Cumberland Place after the first two weeks.

A closure of the layby on Brunswick Place will also be put in for three weeks with some lane closures on Brunswick Place.

What is included in the plans?

Improvements will be carried out to widen the roundabout, make Grosvenor Square one-way and add a new cycle lane, traffic signals and infrastructure.

What about the pocket park that was originally planned?

The scheme was originally planned to include a pocket park at the junction of Devonshire Road with Cumberland Place but this has not been included in this recent programme of work.

Now campaigning group, Southampton Street Space has said: “Whilst we welcome the small steps that the current administration are taking, missing the pocket park from these pre-existing, well thought out, plans reinforces the message that so often comes from the current council that the convenience of drivers trumps all other considerations.”

But deputy leader of the council, Councillor Jeremy Moulton said the Devonshire Road closure is “still under consideration”.
