Essex Police have confirmed the MP has died folowing the incident.

The surgery was being held at the Belfairs Methodist Church, in Eastwood Road North.

A man reportedly ran into the church in the last hour, before the MP was stabbed "several times".

Sir David, 69, a prominent MP, is a huge member of the Make Southend a City campaign, first for Basildon and since 1997 for Southend West.

Conservative councillor John Lamb, who is at the scene, confirmed the Southend West MP was the victim of the incident.

He told reporter Poppie Webster: “I was indoors when I got a phone call just before midday about this, I am so shocked.

“At the moment, all we know is that David has been stabbed several times.

“He is still at the church, and they won’t let us go in to see him. It does look very serious.

“I’m just outside by the police cordon, but at the moment nobody can go in and nobody knows how he is.

“There are two ambulances here and emergency services are still inside dealing with it.

“They’ve been in there for quite a while, so we’ll just have to see.”
