IT’S the characterful New Forest pub which brews its own beers and is named after the monkeys which once lived there.

The Monkey Brewhouse in Lymington once had a landlord who kept monkeys as pets.

But these days it’s run by husband and wife team Will and Lizzie Bradshaw, who took over the pub two and a half years ago and have recently opened their very own micro brewery on site.

Landlord and brewer Will, who grew up in the New Forest and previously ran a brewery in Bristol, was keen to return to his roots at the pub, one of the last remaining free houses in the town.

He told the Daily Echo: “Running a brewery in a pub has been a life’s ambition for me so the most memorable moment so far would have to be re-opening in May 2021 with a shiny new brewery and a brand spanking new terrace.

“I love serving the public directly and hearing their feedback, it has been very satisfying to experience such a strongly positive reception for our beers.”

Daily Echo:

The pub owes its origins to the 18th century tollhouse building which still stands in the garden.

The beers brewed there are inspired by the local area and the pub’s history, such as Buckland Howler Pale Ale and Tollhouse Bitter.

Sea Wall Session IPA, In the Vines IPA and Forest Lager are all best sellers, alongside an extensive gin list and quality wines sourced from independent Lymington merchants Priory Wines.

Daily Echo:

The seasonal menu features a selection of pub classics with daily seafood and meat specials and an award-winning Sunday roast. All of the food is made on site with the Keralan Prawn Curry and Steak and Tollhouse Ale Pie using their own beer among the most popular dishes

All this can be enjoyed either in front of a roaring fire or on the sun trap terrace, new heated seating area overlooking the brewery or out on the lawn.

The popular monthly quiz night has just been relaunched with a charity event in aid of the Friends of Lymington Infant School.

Daily Echo:

Monkey Brewhouse’s bed and breakfast rooms are all newly refurbished.
