AN "EXTREMELY popular" discount store is set to open a huge new branch in Southampton.

Poundland has confirmed that it will move into Westquay retail park in the next five or six weeks.

It will take over the former Mothercare shop. The brand announced it would close all 79 of its UK stores last year.

"We’re looking forward to opening a new store at Unit 6 Westquay shopping centre," said a spokesperson for Poundland.

"We’re putting together a store the city can be proud of, with more of what customers need and at the amazing value we’re famous for – including PEP&CO clothing and homeware and chilled and frozen food.

"As soon as we’ve got more details to share, we’ll be in touch."

Poundland already has three stores in the city, with one in Above Bar Street, another in Bitterne Road and the third in Shirley High Street.

Giles Semper, executive director of the city’s Business Improvement District (GO! Southampton), said: "Poundland is an established brand in the city and extremely popular.

"We know that the people of Southampton rely on it for many staple products. It’s fantastic news that the company is now taking over the former Mothercare store on the retail park.

"Our vacancy rates are already low in comparison with the rest of the country, but this will further improve our position.

"We wish Poundland well and thank them for creating more choice and more new jobs in the city."

The BID said new businesses are flocking to Southampton.

Recently, Heavenly Desserts, Willis Café, Montezuma’s and Papllion have all opened new sites in the city centre.

In the coming months, premium clothing outlet Flannels and Latin American restaurant Las Iguanas are both due to swing open their doors.
